In your browser, on your device, in a private database (IndexedDB). It is never uploaded to us — there is no itAtlas server holding your estate. The app itself is static code we serve you; your data stays with you.
Click Backup to download a single encrypted file, copy it wherever you like, and click Restore on the other machine. That one file is your whole repository — portable across devices and browsers.
Today itAtlas is single-user per device — perfect for an architect or a small team passing an encrypted backup around. True live multi-user (shared, concurrent editing) is on the roadmap as an Enterprise self-hosted mode, where your organisation runs the shared database on its own infrastructure — keeping the sovereignty guarantee intact. Backup files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a passphrase you choose. Without the passphrase the file is unreadable — so keep it safe, because we can't recover it for you (we never see it).
Only if you turn it on, and never your raw identifiers. AI is optional — you supply your own provider key, and with no key everything runs offline and nothing is sent. When it is on, server names, IPs, emails, database names and credentials are always replaced with placeholder tokens before anything leaves your device, and the mapping back stays local. By default only locally-derived column shapes are sent, not cell values; you can opt in to masked sample rows for sharper results. Tokenisation covers identifiers, not people's names: in the default shapes mode nothing but column shapes leaves, but if you opt in to masked sample rows on a sheet that lists people or owners, the staff names, titles and departments in the sampled rows go too (their emails are still tokenised) — leave masked rows off for HR or org sheets if you would rather they didn't. A few features use AI — interpreting a file during import, classifying items, and a rolled-up health summary — and some read masked, tokenised data derived from your repository. The request goes straight from your browser to the provider; there is no itAtlas server in the middle.
Whatever you need to take onward. A formatted EA workbook — an executive summary, a dashboard, every fact sheet as a filterable Excel table and a worst-first list of gaps, with live formulas so the numbers follow later edits — is the leave-behind for a client who doesn't have an EA tool yet. There's also a plain per-sheet Excel export, a LeanIX LDIF-style export mapped to the standard meta model, and a full JSON graph for scripts and pipelines. All generated in your browser.
No — and it isn't trying to. itAtlas is the intermediary: it cleans the mess, reconciles it into a connected model, and hands that model to a bigger tool (or to a spreadsheet). Think of it as the few days of data-wrangling that has to happen before a LeanIX or ServiceNow rollout is worth anything — done in an afternoon, on your own machine.
Yes. Point the Washer at a folder of exports — spreadsheets, CSVs, whatever Ops handed you — and it repairs their structure, reconciles the same thing named differently across files, drops duplicates, and reads lifecycle out of free-text notes. Like a washing machine: everything in at once, clean estate out.

Clearing site data for the app would remove the local database — so keep an up-to-date Backup. That encrypted file is your safety net and your source of truth.
